304 THE PATH OF LIFE

He said: 'When 1 he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you. All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare it unto you.' Accordingly it is written regarding true Christians: 'The 2 anointing which ye received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any one teach you; but as his anointing teacheth you concerning all things, and is true, and is no lie, and even as it taught you, ye abide in him.' This is one of the passages which have prevented true Christians from looking for any future Prophet to arise for their guidance, and have thus kept them from being misled by such impostors as Mani and Mazdak and from following any so-called Mahdi. In the same way they have learned not to call any man their Father 3 upon earth, that is to say, not to trust to any pir or shaikh or murshid or sadhu or guru for guidance in religious matters, but to pray to God for light and the guidance of His Holy Spirit, taking the holy Scriptures as a lantern unto their 4 feet,. On account of his having been granted grace to attain to the true knowledge of God, a true Christian, though living in the world, is not of the world. He strives to do his duty to all men, to avoid slothfulness 1 in his business, to do with all his might whatever his hand findeth 2 to do, as we have already pointed out. But yet his heart is set on higher things than these, according as it is written: 'If 3 then ye were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are upon the earth.' In another passage Christians are warned that they should wean themselves from inordinate love of this transitory world, for the Apostle says: 'Love 4 not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the vainglory of life, is not of the
