Arius (A.D. 256-336) was a clergyman in the city of Alexandria, modern day Egypt. He taught that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was created by God the Father to be an instrument of the creation of the world. Thus, Jesus is neither fully divine nor fully man, but the highest of all of God's creation. "God was not always a Father....The Word of God was not always, but originated from things that were not....for the Son is a creature and a work." (Deposition of Arius 2) However, he believed that Jesus did die on the cross for our sins and was resurrected on the third day. Arianism, therefore, is not the forerunner of Islam.
